Melanie Adamson

BSc, MSc, IHBC

Melanie joined the Built Heritage Consultancy in 2016, following two decades of experience as a conservation officer at several London authorities. This included 12 years in the Design & Conservation Team at the City of Westminster, assessing applications for works affecting listed buildings and conservation areas. As part of the role Melanie provided design advice, and negotiated with applicants and stakeholders including English Heritage / Historic England and the large West End estates. Her various cases included Grade I listed buildings on Berkeley Square, extensions to the Connaught and Langham Hotels, and alterations to the Queen’s Theatre and the Royal Institution.

More recently Melanie was a Design Officer at the Corporation of the City of London, dealing with listed buildings, conservation areas, and large redevelopment proposals. In this role she became familiar with the procedures and attitudes of the City of London planners, and how the various teams within the authority work together on complex projects. She was also again involved with negotiations over complex schemes with various stakeholders, including the conservation area advisory committees, Historic England, and the amenity societies. Following this Melanie’s final conservation officer role was at the London Borough of Wandsworth.

Melanie has degrees in Land Management (for general practice surveying) and Historic Conservation. Her conservation officer experience included enforcement cases and appearing as an expert witness in Public Inquiries.
